In recent times drug addiction became a burning problem for the society. It is a social crisis also. People from various status of the society are becoming drug dependent day-by day. Lack of awareness addiction causes economic crisis of the society in general and the family in particular.
Keeping this idea in mind IRIIM started deaddiction programme in early ‘90s. Later on 'PRATYAYA' (confidence) -a 15 bed Drug De-Addiction cum Rehabilitation Center was established formally in 1993 with partial sponsorship of Ministry of Social & Empowerment (earlier Ministry of Welfare) Govt. of India. As we believe addiction is a chemical dependency both mentally & physically, so we treat the addict population through integrated system of therapy like traditional Acupuncture-Yoga-Naturopathy & Diet therapy primarily with minimum support of Western Medicine along with Counseling.
First step is to aware the addict person. We organize the awareness generation camp in the various addict prone area.
More than 5000 addicts are detoxified from our centre. They are coming from different area of Howrah (both rural & urban), surrounding districts of West Bengal and other states & neighboring countries.
1. Pre-Detox. Period:
Sufferers are coming to our center for outdoor treatment. In our O.P.D, we provide general health checkup and pro-nature therapies like Acupuncture, Yoga-Naturopathy, Counseling & Awareness inputs for at least 7 days before the day of admission in the indoor for detoxification (if the patient is eligible for admission after thorough health checkup). The aim of pre-detox programme is to reduce the dose of drug, minimize the possible sufferings during the indoor treatment- both physical as well as mental, to get habituated & convinced about the Pro-Nature Therapies & Integrated Management and to develop the mental strength of the sufferer.
2. Detox. Period:
Acupuncture-Yoga-Naturopathy-Diet Therapy and Counseling were given as per clinical condition to minimize the symptoms during the period. Boiled vegetarian diet, fruit, and sufficient drinking water given. Besides, mild sedatives and analgesics used, if needed. Rarely manifested severe symptoms managed mainly by emergency modern medicine.
In Chronic phase, the problems were alleviated mainly by Acupuncture-Yoga-Naturopathy-Diet. For mental rehabilitation, special emphasis was given on Pranayama and Meditation. Usually fifteen days treatment are given. Detailed Therapy Protocol has been developed.
Various Treatment Techniques used for the Addict Patients:
3. Post Detox:
(a) Follow-up programme:
Through letters & Home Visit. Weekly Group discussion with their family, Physical Check-up, Counselling.
(b) Review of advice
Review of advice (i.e. Yogasana, Relaxation, Naturopathic diet) which we have advised during the discharge. Acupuncture-Yoga-Naturopathy-Diet Therapy are continued as & when necessary. Stress on Pro-Nature art of living are given to combat the problem of possible relapse.
(c) Rehabilitation Programme:
Rehabilitation is a process of incorporating an individual in the situation where he was previously before. The process starts from by utilizing potentiality of individual and community resources. Most important is patient's involvement in the process of rehabilitation and the commitment of counselor & social worker. Untill & unless, a complete co-operation is obtained from addict, rehabilitation process can't be effective. Disablement to individual makes them helpless in society, the role of social worker in this field need to motivate and to provide certain amount of assurance so that individual do not feel himself lonely in the society. A good report among patients, counselors and social workers is essential, otherwise the process of rehabilitation can't materialize.
Other important things that have to be taken into consideration is that individual's involvement, capability and potentiality after treatment has to be taken into consideration while designing programme for individual. Rehabilitation process must also take note of existing limitation of society resources for rehabilitation. After analysing cause and effect of the situation, emotional addict has to be provided with necessary support in order to overcome emotional drawbacks. Addict should be boosted up at interval, which may strengthen the process of rehabilitation.
